Update from our Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Chile!
We were very relieved to hear that Kimberly Feldman, one of our outbound Rotary Youth Exchange students, is safe and sound in Chile following the earthquake there. Here is a message from her:
“We did feel the earthquake in Viña and it was terrifying. On the richter scale it was an 8.8 in Concepcion, 7 in Santiago, and 6 in Valparaiso/Viña is what I heard. The actual tremor lasted about 2 minutes (I later heard that on the radio, I can't say I was counting while it was going on) and was actually quite strong. The building swayed quite a bit as we were on the 20th floor, lots of pictures and paintings fell, and one of the televisions. There were some superficial cracks in the drywall at the apartment. We continued to feel minor tremors and sways throughout the rest of the morning.
At about 8 am we headed back to Santiago. I believe a bridge and building collapsed in Santiago if I understood correctly (we were getting a lot of mixed information from the radio) but as far as I know the majority of the damage is farther south in the Bio-Bio region. At the apartment there wasn't too much damage, lots of superficial cracks in the walls and ceilings, loose tiles, broken plants, etc. At the grandparent's house there was even less damage, so that's good.
We're still pretty shaken up still, but everything is fine.”
